Brown Plant Hopper

Scientific Name - Nilaparvata lugens

Occurrence Stage - Vegetative Stage 

Nature of Damage - Attack the whole plant and damage by sucking the plant sap from the leaves and stem.

Damage Symptoms

  • Uneven yellow and green patches on the plant 

  • Yellowing of older leaves from the leaf tip to the midrib

  • Drying or burnt of leaves called Hopper Burn

Best Control Measures 

  • Avoid to cultivate more than 2 crops per year

  • Cultivate early maturing varieties

  • Split application of Nitrogen fertilizer 

  • Drain the water for 3-4 days if there is a high density of hoppers in the field

  • Release natural enemies like predators and parasitoids to the field 

  • Reduce chemicals usage to increase existing numbers of natural enemies in the field

  • IR 26, IR 64, IR 36, IR 56, IR 72,  IR 74  varieties are resistant to brown plant hopper

Chemical Control 

  • Apply systemic pesticides

  • Use contact pesticides only if needed 

  • Chlopyriphos/ Carbosulfan/ Asitarmiprit/ Cartat
