Causal Organism - Avian poxvirus (Fowl poxvirus, FPV)

Occurrence age - 1-3 months age

Symptoms - Occurrence of sores and swellings on the comb, wattles, and skin of the face. They form as a pale spot and become yellowish and swollen before drying out to form a thick dark scab. Swellings around the nostrils can cause nasal discharge. Swellings on the eyelids leads to blindness. Swelling in the mucous membrane of the mouth can cause loss of appetite and become malnutrition and death.

Prevention and Curing- Vaccination with fowl pox vaccine in the first few weeks after hatching and again after 12-16 weeks, isolating sick chicks to prevent spread of the disease, cleaning houses properly not to enter disease transmitting agents such as fleas and mosquitos, do not vaccinate during or immediately after disease infestation. Although there is no treatment for fowl pox, treat with iodine spray to prevent secondary infections.
