Leaf folder
  • Rice, sorghum, maize, and wheat are the main host plants.

  • Also occur in wild hosts (wild rice, banana, coconut, oak, barley, tobacco, sugarcane, millet)

Scientific Name - Cnaphalocrocis medinalis 

Occurrence Stage - Vegetative Stage

Nature of Damage - Caterpillar folds the leaf and attach the leaf margins together and feed inside the leaf fold. 

Damage Symptoms - Vertical leaf folds, transparant and whitish streaks on the leaf blade

Best Control Measures 

  • In China, egg parasotiod wasps (Trichogramma japonicum and Apanteles cypris) are used

  • Granulosis virus can destroy 30-40 % of caterpillars

  • IET 8675/ 8698/ 8710/ 7776 varieties are moderately resistant to leaf folder 

  • Narrow-leaf blade varieties are more resistant than wide-leaf varieties 

Chemical Control 

Use the following organophosphate and organothiophosphate insecticides at recommended rate. 

  • Neem oil

  • Diazinon EC 1.0 Kg/ ha

  • Dichlorvos EC- 0.3-0.5 Kg/ha

  • Dichrotophos EC 0.38 Kg/ha

  • Fenitrothion EC 0.6 Lit/ha

  • Fenthion EC 0.6 Lt/ha

  • Mephosfolan EC 0.5-1.0 Kg/ha

  • Phosmet WP 

  • Phosphamidon EC 0.2-0.3 Kg/ha
