Magnesium deficiency can occur throughout the growth cycle of the crop. If deficiency is not severe, plant height and tiller number are not affected, however, poor panicle quality. Reduced number of filled grain, protein and starch content.
In irrigated rice fields, magnesium deficiency rarely occurs because adequate amounts are usually supplied with irrigation water. In rainfed lowland and upland rice field, magnesium deficiency is more common without the replenishment of crop residues or mineral. Magnesium deficiency mainly occurs in highly weathered acid soils and coarse-textured sandy soils.
