Rice Bug and Its Control

Scientific Name - Leptocorisa acuta Thunberg

Occurrence Stage - Flowering Stage, Grain Filling Stage

Nature of Damage - Both nymphs and adults suck plant sap from leaves and developing grain from pre-flowering spikelets to soft dough stage.

Damage Symptoms 

  • Grains become small and shriveled by being sucked the milk from the developing grains 

  • Causing grain discoloration

Best Control Measure 

  • Cultivate early and late maturing varieties 

  • Remove weeds around the field

  • Indica rice varieties (Sathi, Soma ,Mondagakutty) are resistant to rice bugs. 

Chemical Control 

  • Apply malathion powder 

  • Apply approved contact insecticides at recommended rate. 

  • Acephate EC 50-100 gm/ha

  • Azinphos-methyl- powder-0.3-0.5 Kg/ ha

  • Chlofenviphos EC 1.0-1.5 kg/ Ha

  • Dichlorvos EC 300-1000 gam/ha

  • Fenthion -powder- 0.6-1.2 Kg/ha

  • Phenthoate EC 0.5 Kh/ha
