• Make sure the sow has delivered all of piglets and check the number of placentas according to the number of piglets born, that placenta will generally fall off 2-4 hours after the last piglet is born.
• To ensure that the placenta is completely expelled, inject 2 cc (ml) of oxytocin to the sow.
• Immediately after birth, quickly catch the piglets and feed them first milk because it contain of energy and antibodies to prevent disease.
• The first milk comes in usually within 2-3 hours.
• Then, trim all 8 sharp teeth (4 upper and 4 lower canine teeth) using nail clippers or dental scissors that have been sterilized well, and cut off 2/3 of the upper sharp part, taking care not to cut into the gums.
• The sooner this to be done, the better (1 day after birth) because the piglet teeth are still young, soft, not broken, and not bleeding much.
• This practice is to prevent piglets from biting each other and mothers teats when they breastfeed.
• After cutting the teeth, can cut the tail with knife or razor that has been sterilized, then can cut off three-quarters of the length of the tail, then apply iodine to prevent the spread of infection.
• Tail docking is to reduce biting, wasted energy, and the transmission of diseases.
