After giving birth

After giving birth

Make sure the sow has delivered all of piglets and check the number of placentas according to the number of piglets born, that placenta will generally fall off 2-4 hours after the last piglet is born.

To ensure that the placenta is completely expelled, inject 2 cc (ml) of oxytocin to the sow.

Immediately after birth, quickly catch the piglets and feed them first milk because it contain of  energy and antibodies to prevent disease.

The first milk comes in usually within 2-3 hours.

Then, trim all 8 sharp teeth (4 upper and 4 lower canine teeth) using nail clippers or dental scissors that have been sterilized well, and cut off 2/3 of the upper sharp part, taking care not to cut into the gums.

The sooner this to be done, the better (1 day after birth) because the piglet teeth are still young, soft, not broken, and not bleeding much.

This practice is to prevent piglets from biting each other and mothers teats when they breastfeed.

After cutting the teeth, can cut the tail with knife or razor that has been sterilized, then can cut off three-quarters of the length of the tail, then apply iodine to prevent the spread of infection.

Tail docking is to reduce biting, wasted energy, and the transmission of diseases.
