Benefits of Eggshells for Soil Eggshells, which are often thrown away as kitchen waste, can actually provide many benefits to the soil. Adding eggshells to the soil can provide nutrients to plants, helping them grow healthier and stronger. They can also help protect plants from certain pests. In addition, eggshells can help adjust the soil’s pH (acid-alkaline level). They can be used for both outdoor and indoor plants. In my own home, crushed eggshells are often placed on roses, jasmine, orchids, and other ornamental plants. They are very beneficial. Therefore, here are the three main benefits of adding eggshells to your garden or flowerpot: 1. Improves plant health Eggshells contain a mineral called calcium carbonate, which supports healthy plant growth. This nutrient also helps strengthen plant cell walls. For us, it can be compared to how calcium strengthens bones and joints. Additionally, eggshells contain small amounts of phosphorus and potassium. Phosphorus promotes root growth, seed formation, flowering, and fruit set. Potassium strengthens the stem and supports the growth and overall survival of plants. 2. Protects Plants from Pests If your garden or flowerbed is frequently attacked by snails or slugs, eggshells can help protect your plants. Due to their sharp, gritty texture, eggshells can deter these pests from approaching your plants. You can sprinkle eggshells around the base of your plants for protection. Note: If you are using eggshells as your primary source of nutrients, it is best to grind them into small pieces. However, if the goal is to control pests, placing large pieces of eggshell (about 2 inches in size) around your plants is more effective than grinding them into a powder. 3. Maintains the Acid-Alkaline Balance of the Soil Another benefit of adding eggshells is their ability to adjust the pH level of the soil. The calcium in eggshells can help raise the pH level of the soil (reduce acidity). Most plants struggle to grow well in soil that is too acidic. In such cases, adding eggshells can help rebalance soil conditions. If you are concerned about how eggshells may affect the pH level of your soil, you can mix ground eggshell powder with used coffee grounds before applying it to your plants. #mekongfarmapp #Mekongfarm #agriculture #smartaxiata
