Selecting the right location for digging a fish pond according to technical requirements is very essential for successful implementation and better management.
The criteria selection of location for digging the fish pond as follows:
- Close to home that better to manage
- Ponds are dug in flat areas but do not flood during the rainy season.
- A little flooded can be increasing the dike
- Located in a clear area with no trees around.
- Soil is impermeable or has low permeability.
- Near a water source, if available
- The pond next to rice-field are much better
- Away from areas where agricultural pesticides are used.

Regarding the characteristics, shape or size of the pond that can culture fish is to properly prepare the fish pond according to the technique to be successful, which that pond should be:
- The excavation has a rectangular shape which better management
- Pond should be 100 square meters or more, which is suitable for culture and fish growing well.
- Pond has a suitable depth of 1.5-2.5 meters, depending on the size of the pond to be dug.
- Pond dike must be higher and stronger to prevent flooding.
- Pond must have a slope of dike to prevent pond liner erosion and provide a place for fish feeding and spawning.

The fish pond should have the size and characteristics as shown in the table below:

- Pond must have an appropriate slope of dike (slope) to prevent erosion or landslides.
- The bottom of the pond should be flat and have a slope to another side for better water out-let and fish harvesting.
- Ponds must be planted with grass on the edge and the slope of the pond to prevent soil erosion during rainy season.
- Along the dike, pipes should be embedded to drain water into the pond.
- Ponds should be fenced to prevent cows, buffaloes, and pigs from entering the pond which causing damage to the pond and polluting the water.
- Also, prevent children from playing nearby the pond, which can lead to drowning.
- In addition, a manure must be prepared next to the pond to easily drain the fertilizer into the fish pond.
- The manure pond should be dug 02 meters length, 1meter width, and 1 meter deep. Clean the bottom of the manure pond and lay a plastic sheet to prevent manure leaking into the soil.
- We can use a tank or jar as a fertilizer production or use cement tank as a compost pond.
