Tips to Follow During the Transplanting Period

Tips to Follow During the Transplanting Period

  • Soil tillage should be proper, smooth and the surface of soil should be levelled

  • Seedlings should be strong, uniform in size and free from diseases

  • Transplant at the seedling age of 15-20 days (if the seedling age is young, transplanting recovery is speedy, emerging 4-5 tillers more from each plant and early emergence of tillers that make tillers strong and provide large panicles.

  • Irrigate water about 3 days ahead before removal of seedlings for transplanting.  Handle gently with care at the bottom of the seedling for removal from the soil. Do not tie the seedling very tightly. Transplant the seedlings immediately after removal.

  • Apply 2-3 seedlings per hill. If only one seedling is planted, number of lost hills could be many. If transplanted more than 3 seedlings per hill, it can reduce number of tillers and also cause delay tillering. Pest and diseases infection could be more and also required more seeds.

  • Plant spacing should be uniform and proper. If the plants are too dense, pest and disease can be infected easily and competition between the plants would be high that will cause small size of panicles with less number of seeds.

  • Seedlings should be planted at 1 inch depth in soil. If planted more than 1 inch, plant recovery time will be delayed and the root formation from 2 to 3 layers that result with delayed tillering. The tillers could be weak and rice yield could be decreases.

  • Irrigate water immediately after transplanting. The water level should keep at two third of the seedlings’ height and maintain this level for 7 days. If the water level is lower about 3 inches, the plants and roots would suffer from high temperature and could be damaged. Weeds could not be controlled.

  • If there are frequent rainfalls after transplanting, drain the water from the plot after 7 days, so that roots will grow properly, emerge more numbers of tillers and the tillers become strong

  • Refill the hill gaps after 6 days of transplanting. If refilling delay, panicle emergence time and maturity time would not uniform, and that would cause mixing of green paddy seeds when harvest paddy. Hence, refilling of hills should be done within one month after transplanting.
