• Selecting the right gilt is important to get more piglets in the litter and the piglets grow faster. The selection criteria are:
Avoid inbreeding: A gilt should not be bred with father.
Select from a sow who has given birth and weaned many calves (no less than 9).
The gilt should be of a strong built and have no less than 12 nipples (the same criteria as sow).
The gilt must grow fast, be the largest in the litter, be healthy, have strong and straight legs, and have well-developed reproductive organs.
Smooth fur and skin, open mouth, multiple-feeding, never has any infectious diseases.
