• A gilt is a young female pig that is ready to breed for the first time at around 8-9 months age.
• During this time, the gilt should be placed near the boar cage to help them mate quickly, but not with the boar.
• Gilt should be fed carefully to avoid becoming too fat or thin.
• Usually, it is fed about 2-2.5 kg per head.
• In addition, it is given fresh vegetables with the feed.
• It is useful to introduce new gilt to replace the old sows and allow the gilt to enter the group and encourage the new gilt to find males quickly.
• Be careful when placing new gilt with other sows to avoid biting each other.
• Record the date of any gilts that shows signs of first mating but has not yet mated.
• 3 weeks after placing a newly gilt in the cage, it should be allowed to adapt the good weather and at sometime should be moved it to own cage.
• The cages of gilt should be placed near the boar, which will encourage the gilt to find boar quickly.
• Let the boar walk alternately in front of the gilt cage every day under our supervision.
• Remove any gilt that have found boar and let the boars mate in different cages.
• If possible, keep that sow in a cage to allow them to move around for at least half of first pregnancy period because the body is still developing.
